Can saving on fresh flowers help you retire earlier? Probably not.
Can getting a “bang for your buck” help you retire earlier? You bet.
Taken together, when you make smart purchases and make the most of your money, you can enjoy your life today and retire earlier tomorrow.
Do you hate wasting money? I sure do.
It doesn’t matter if I spend $5 or $500, I want my money’s worth and then some.
When the half-and-half goes bad before the due date, I go nuts. When I wash a shirt just once and it comes out misshapen, I have to stop myself from cursing like a sailor. It’s so frustrating!
Do I want a “Bang For My Buck?” You bet.
Don’t you?
So to my complete surprise, Trader Joe’s gave a gift that keeps on giving two weeks ago. My husband and I were having a celebration at our home for some friends. I stopped by Trader Joe’s on my way home and picked up two bouquets of flowers to brighten up the place. They were $3.99 each.
That’s right, I got out of there with two arms full of flowers for less than eight bucks.
Guess what? It’s day 15 and the party is long over. Both bouquets are still looking gorgeous!
Here’s what we did to care for them:
We changed the water every day.
We put in the treatment packet that came with the flowers and changed the water. I didn’t realize my husband was changing the water, too. Those flowers got fresh water every day.
We trimmed the stems.
Every four days or so, when changing the water, I trimmed the stems about a half inch or so.
And here we are on day 15 still looking fabulous.
Turns out we did a few things right.
ProFlowers.com blog has tips on making your flowers last longer. They tested different remedies such as changing the water and trimming the stems as we did. They also recommend adding flower food and/or a baking soda mixture with the water change. The other home remedies such as adding a coin in the bottom or using hairspray failed.
They say its the little things in life that make you happy.
Don’t you love having fresh flowers in your home? When you have blooms for two whole weeks and inexpensive to boot, that’s a great value. I am happy.
Trader Joe’s wins the “Bang for your Buck” award from Acres of Acorns this week.
Congratulations!
